GAF 2008 not only marks the return of the festival after a year’s hiatus, but it also celebrates Gallatin’s renovated spaces, which feature, for the first time in the school’s history, galleries for the visual arts and a new performance space, The Jerry H. Labowitz Theatre for the Performing Arts.

GAF originated in 1992 as a collaborative effort between Professor Laurin Raiken (Chair of the Gallatin Arts Program) and graduate student Barry Spanier. Under Professor Raiken’s guidance, Spanier developed the festival as part of his Master’s Thesis. Since then GAF has expanded into the largest public event sponsored by the Gallatin School. Driven by a student management and production team, GAF provides hands-on opportunities for students to gain knowledge of the process required to produce a multidisciplinary arts festival. Likewise, student artists collaborate with faculty mentors over the course of several months to develop their work. GAF is a learning experience emphasizing the development of ideas and collaborative innovation.

This year we gather under the thematic umbrella “The Artist in Dialogue.” I am excited by the way art galvanizes communities by serving as springboards for action and discussion. Each day of this year’s festival has been curated based on thematic links in the projects in an effort to stimulate fresh thinking and new connections that transcend disciplinary boundaries.

Thank you for joining us and supporting our continued mission to promote artistic expression and interdisciplinary dialogue!
