Covideo Chat Games

I have built my artistic practice upon creating multiplayer, face-to-face, physical, digital games. My games are meant to be played at public events — largely festivals and galleries — celebrating the unscripted banter, physicality and play that emerge between players. During the Coronavirus Pandemic there is no place for games like this to exist safely, and consequently I’ve lost the motivation and inspiration to make the kind of games that I have known and loved. And while I’ve tried to find ways to play with friends online, it is not the same. Covideo Chat Games is my clumsy attempt to hold on to moments of play and fun with friends while addressing the realities of life during the pandemic.

Kaho Abe is a game designer, media artist and educator based in Osaka, Japan, formerly from New York City. She designs and builds physical, digital games with custom controllers, hoping to bring people together in new and playful ways, face-to-face, in public spaces. Her work is a culmination of her lifelong interest in technology, her love of social games and her previous career as a fashion designer. More recently Kaho has been designing playful experiences for the theme park setting.

Kaho holds a MFA from Parsons Design and Technology program, and was a former Resident at Eyebeam and New York University’s Game Innovation Lab.

“I design my games around the human experience, and then utilize the technology to support it.”
