There were many kingdoms that were lost throughout Chinese history, and the kingdom of Dali was one of them. The residents of the ancient town of Dali used to be predominantly Bai people, instead of Han Chinese. The town is in front of the snow-covered Cang mountain, and behind the lake Erhai. The place is famously romanticised in a well-known Chinese novel series in the 60’s called Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils.

Land Acknowledgement The Gallatin Galleries is located on the traditional territory of the Lenni-Lenape, called “Lenapehoking.” The Lenape People lived in this territory in harmony for thousands of years. During the colonial era and early federal period, many were removed, but some also remain among the historical tribal communities of the region. We acknowledge the Lenni-Lenape as the original people of this land and their continuing relationship with their territory and we affirm the aspiration of the Lenape Chief Tamanend, that there be harmony between the Indigenous people of this land and the descendants of the immigrants to this land.
