Since the summer of 2020, Assembly youth fellows Princess Kelly, Jeremy Velez, Amir Akram, Geremia Romain, Latham Butler and Darrell Santana with the mentorship of Artist & Co-Director Shaun Leonardo, have utilized a series of visualization and embodiment exercises that invite us to challenge our preconceived notions, while developing a historical understanding of policing. By collectively imagining and learning solutions for conflict, we hope to create a community that is able to establish safety without the use of coercion, policing and violence. First piloted with The Gallatin Galleries at NYU in early 2021, the work is now being conducted with youth enrolled in programming at the Red Hook Community Justice Center.
Workshop 1: Storytelling
Tuesday, November 1st from 2 – 4:30pm
Utilizing a game of cause and effect, participants will delve into the historical emergence and growth of the New York Police Department, while questioning our collective memory of racially-charged events in the city and their resulting outcomes. Workshop 2: Performance
Wednesday, November 9th from 6 – 8:30pm
Utilizing visual storytelling, participants will create gestures which embody episodes of police activity, while problematizing our reliance on law enforcement and seeking alternative solutions to safety. In The Jerry H. Labowitz Theatre for the Performing Arts.
Workshop 3: Visual Art
Wednesday, November 30th from 6 – 8:30pm
Visualizing scenarios that involve intensifying conflict, participants will learn various de-escalation techniques, while developing a practice of listening toward both internal and external conflict resolution.In The Jerry H. Labowitz Theatre for the Performing Arts.
