(Un)Naturally Beautiful

Two black and white pencil drawings hung parallel to each other. Each drawing has a figure, one of which depicts a conservator reconstructing a photograph and the other drawing depicts a man with his fit highlighted to the viewer.

Think of past and present, but not yet future. Think of color and shade. Think of whole and think of parts. Think of home. Think of strength. Think of human, think of other. Think of power. Now think of you and think of the future. I have long been interested in the labels we use to organize ourselves as well as the world around us. When we blur the boundaries of these labels, how does it affect our interpretation of beauty?

Seyni Tahirou

Seyni Tahirou is a senior at Gallatin with a concentration in Scientific Illustration. He is exploring topics of observation and representation across time and the influence art has had in shaping our understanding of science. Exploring questions of aesthetics, accuracy, objectivity, knowledge production, and their intersections with social structures, he has dedicated his time at Gallatin to integrating these ideas into depictions of people, plants, and animals within the scientific community. He is originally from Niger but was raised in Nigeria. By the time he reached high school, he had already amassed a collection of sketchbooks filled with portraits and still lifes. His interest in natural forms led him to gravitate toward the sciences. He now uses his art to push his interest in science further.
