Silver Lining
Silver Lining is my choreographic ode to adolescent female dancers, born from personal reflections on the constraints of ballet. While dance is often seen as liberating, ballet’s rigid framework can confine young dancers from life’s joys. I question the necessity of such repression for success in ballet and ponder its true essence and criteria for worthiness.
With Silver Lining, I aim to spark hope for change within the ballet world, challenging its traditional aesthetic and prompting reflection on its sustainability. Despite claims of diversity and inclusivity, dancers still face scrutiny for their physical attributes. This work invites audiences to reflect on the past, challenge the present, and shape a more equitable future in ballet.
Choreographer: Reyna Carrillo
Dancers: Jinnie Kang, Amanda Lindamood, Kaitlin McCann, & Lerato Ragontse
Reyna Carrillo (she/her), originally from Saltillo, Mexico, has a background in classical ballet. She is currently a master’s student at NYU Gallatin with a concentration in Performing Arts Administration, Organizational Leadership, and Psychology. Her interests include directing, producing, marketing, and fundraising.
Reyna’s artistic process is deeply influenced by her personal story. It draws heavily from her background in ballet, which began at a boarding school when she was just 11 years old, continued through experiences in Russia, and eventually led her to New York City. She is interested in creating environments that support artists holistically — financially, emotionally, psychologically, and physically. Recent credits include: A Caricature Of Intimacy (producer, The Tank), The Gospel of Joan (Crawford) (producer, The Tank), and Gallatin Arts Festival 2023 (producer, NYU Gallatin).
