Curators’ and Producers’ Statements:

“The producers of the 2021 Gallatin Arts Festival are thrilled to welcome you to this spring’s virtual Festival, a celebration of art created in and in response to the past year.

During this unstable time, it is more important than ever to find creative ways to connect with each other. The Festival’s lineup of performers not only display an incredible range of intellectual scholarship and artistic technique, they have embraced the moment and elevated their art through a virtual medium. The musicians, writers, actors, directors, and dancers of GAF 2021 have kept moving forward, using the limitations imposed on them as an opportunity to further investigate their ideas. Their interdisciplinary works of art examine lived experiences, offer self-discoveries, and outline creative pathways that will continue on as an emblem of this era.

By engaging with GAF 2021, you are supporting a community of scholars and artists who pursue creation and collaboration despite physical limitations. We hope that the lasting connections, meaningful partnerships, and community of GAF 2021 continue to flourish beyond the three weeks of our Festival.

We encourage you to join us for virtual Q&A sessions, webinars, panel discussions, and performances as we celebrate the students who make Gallatin exceptional!”

“As curators, we strive to move without ego, facilitating a space that nourishes with care as well as creativity. We work in service of the art, artists, and the audience of our exhibition. After the past year, we set out to reimagine the capacities of an arts festival and how we could cultivate togetherness once again.

For many students, the Gallatin experience may often be solitary as we pursue our own individualized studies. While the Festival celebrates the specialized scholarship of the work of each artist, it also seeks to foster strength in our community and to uplift its artistic voices.

While not necessarily confined to a certain theme, we gathered artists in conversation with one another, exploring questions of the reverent and sacred, of remembrance and materiality, and of the idyllic and absurd. The shared aesthetic space allows these pieces to breathe. They exist as themselves and in conversation with one another, guiding a dialogue that inspires possibility.

Although this is a non-traditional gallery space, we ask for your open hearts and minds. From wherever you are, join us in celebration of Gallatin’s unique artistry.”

MISSION

The Gallatin Arts Festival is a community-wide celebration of the unique artistry and interdisciplinary scholarship of students at NYU’s Gallatin School. The festival features student work in the visual and performing arts and serves as a galvanizing force and springboard for action and discussion through the creation and presentation of artistic work.

HISTORY

The Gallatin Arts Festival originated in 1992 as a collaborative effort between Professor Laurin Raiken and graduate student Barry Spanier. Under Professor Raiken’s guidance, Spanier developed the festival as part of his master’s thesis. Since then GAF has expanded into the largest public event sponsored by the Gallatin School. GAF provides hands-on opportunities for students to gain knowledge of the process required to produce a multidisciplinary arts festival. Under guidance from members of the arts faculty and student affairs, the Student Leadership Team serves as the primary support for the festival. GAF is a learning experience emphasizing the development of ideas and collaborative innovation.
