Variations on a Compass
STATEMENT:
I utilize the gap between an event and the memory of an event — we can work backward from a wanted memory into an event that would spawn it, and synthesize that memory from a fantasy (memory palace summoned by fetish object). Sculpting, for me, is granting wishes; I then stitch together that place wholly, fortifying it so it can be recalled when needed. My hope is to create gentle places for those without places to return to: fruit that grows from salted soil, stuffed animals the size of memory.
ARTIST BIO:
Hunter Thompson is a junior at NYU Gallatin studying reification; their practice usually circles around prosthetic memory, scale malleability, wishes, mirrors, gifts, and gifting.
