Unintended Places
STATEMENT:
Unintended Places explores memories of places that one constantly returns to without really knowing why. It also touches on feelings of longing and nostalgia for these memories that we can’t recreate because both ourselves and the place have changed over time.
The piece started off with a prompt: “Describe a place you know very well, but use no drawings or words to do so. This should not be a famous or important place to anyone but you.” The first place that came to mind was this soccer field I used to run on when I was eleven or twelve. In my attempt to fulfill the prompt, I opted for storytelling and recounted this memory in as much detail as I could to friends, strangers, professors, and my family. All of these retellings were unscripted and exciting, but I found the one with my parents to be the most revealing. I invite you to eavesdrop on this last conversation and see if a place of your own comes to mind.
