This is an interview with Cheyenne Bryant, curator in Gallatin Arts Festival 2020 & 2021. Cheyenne is a junior-year student currently based in Manhattan, New York City. Headshot of a woman

What do you study in Gallatin and how did you arrive at what you study?

My concentration is “Healing from Sickness: Curing/Mending Colonial Trauma Through Art, Education, and Play’. It definitely took me a while to really feel confident and assured in what I’m studying! I started at Gallatin wanting to study Art Administration and Non-Profit Management, but literally, a month ago, I had an epiphany that I wanted to do something related to art therapy and the healing capabilities of art-making and practice. I’ve always been passionate about the connection between psychology and art-making, so it wasn’t a complete shift, but more me finally becoming attuned with what I really wanted to do!

The festival is coming up in about a month, what are some of the things you’re excited about?

I’m incredibly excited to meet our artists and work with them on curating such an innovative festival this year! It will be really interesting having a virtual/in-person, hybrid-like festival as well.

What would you say to people who have never been involved in our festival or have never been an audience before?

Come support our students! There is so much fascinating artwork happening at Gallatin, and if you’re ever strolling past our school and see something interesting, keep an open, adventurous mind and take a look.

How did you get involved in the Gallatin Arts Festival?

I’ve been interested in GAF as a Gallatin freshman, and I had the fortunate opportunity to curate for my sophomore and junior years. It seemed like such an amazing chance to get involved in creating an arts festival, so I knew that I wanted to be a part of something like this.

What are some challenges and moments of joy in your work in GAF?

Balancing my schedule is definitely something that I’ve been challenged by with GAF! Although it is a very time-consuming opportunity, it is definitely worth the stress and hours. One thing I absolutely enjoy about this experience is working with my team and collaborating with artists on their beautiful work. It truly is a worthwhile experience seeing all our hard work come to fruition!

How do you think getting involved in GAF influence or add to your experience in Gallatin?

Curating for GAF has definitely shaped my college experience at Gallatin. I’ve met and learned from such incredible and intelligent people, and made great friendships in the process! Moreover, it has given me a chance to actually learn the components of putting on an arts festival and, essentially, curating a gallery, and for that, I am incredibly grateful.
