ARTIST STATEMENT:
“‘Algorhythm’ is an original interactive experience for users to engage with music. It’s inspired by my love of lights in nightclubs and concerts, and light installations in general.
Algorithms are defined by an input triggering a certain output. Here, the input is music, and the output is visuals.
The interactive part is that the user chooses their own input music. Algorhythm then detects volume and frequency to create a reactive visual emulating digital light shows with changing colours and movement.
This is not animation – it is purely algorithmic art I coded from scratch. The beauty of its reactive nature is that no two songs, or sounds, in existence will result in the same visual output. It is not limited to or exclusionary of any particular genre or instrument. This was designed in this way to meet my goals of inclusivity to re-create a sense of freedom of expression through music, and re-build lost community in a time when venues aren’t accessible.
On the web application, a user can use the keyboard to toggle between various patterns. This adds a further element of interactivity for users to be able to control the visuals that accompanies their listening experience.”
