ARTIST STATEMENT:

Within this project, Jaden has utilized the lovely skills of hole punching and embroidery to create a gran senora, La Virgen De Guadalupe. It was said that Guadalupe had stated the notable phrase of , “¿No estoy yo aquí que soy tu madre?” (am i not here with you? I am your mother) to hisapnic peasant, Juan Diego when her presence was questioned. Being thousands of miles away from her family in the middle of the famous cut throat Manhattan, she finds lonesome to be a frequent visitor. The only words that have been able to lift her spirit within this transition have been those of La Virgencita. Although she does not define herself as a religious being, Jaden would like to pay tribute to her comforting words, enlightening essence, and protective presence in her life.

Jaden is a 20 year old aspiring artist from Los Angeles, California. Her concentration at Gallatin involves sustainable fashion, marketing, and activism. At the early age of six, her nana from Mexico and grandmother from Lebanon embedded their eloquent techniques of knitting, stitching, and embroidery into the curious little head of hers. From then on, these beautiful crafts became her therapy. Jaden expressed that she fabricated her emotions within her creations similar to cloth being bound by thread. It was not until Jaden got older that she was educated on the harsh reality of fast fashion. This knowledge fueled her passion and dedication to advocate for those who work in an industry that unfortunately lays on the substructure of exploitation. With the advantage of Jaden’s creativity she hopes to someday establish a sustainable brand of her own with the intention to stop the cycle of unethical fashion.
