ARTIST STATEMENT:
“I have always loved drawing. When I was a kid, I tried really hard to hone that passion and be one of those artists who could draw a face so realistically that you’d think it was a photograph. As I got older, and frustrated with how unrealistic my drawings would turn out, I realized what was way more fun and less stressful was making art without the pressure of realism. From this realization came a few years of art that plays into the appeal of the ugly and ignores most artistic ideals of technique and aesthetic. I took this new way I was loving to draw and combined it with my innate love of observation. I love to watch people, make up stories for strangers, and be generally judgmental of the people and things that I notice around me. I realized, however, that what I observe about a stranger may say more about me than the strangers themselves. And so, I started a series of drawings of people I observed in the park and collected it into a bizarre form of a visual journal. Some observations are sweet, some humorous, some weird or creepy. I just drew what came to mind when I sat down on a park bench in Washington Square and watched the world around me. I hope that my brain will help me continue with my art, and that I can keep creating slightly off-putting, but maybe kinda fun, drawings for as long as my hands will work.”
