ARTIST STATEMENT:

As the pandemic continues it coats our environments, conversations, and minds in a stubborn goo which becomes entangled with our conscious minds as an ever present force of nature. Ick was created as a stream of consciousness, evolving and developing as the pandemic goo spread across the field of view, engulfing existing thoughts and structures. The painting exists as a physical manifestation of the anxieties, claustrophobia, and sadness the collective human consciousness feels as the goo consumes us.

BIO:

Clara Luce was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and now attends NYU Gallatin School of Individualized Study. Her concentration is Critical Making: the exploration of abstract concepts through physical and digital creation. It encompasses the creation of artwork, objects, or code in an effort to learn and experience knowledge from unique and powerful perspectives. She combines her scientific and art practices to revitalize the play and wonder removed from institutionalized science, and is inspired by the works of Athanasius Kircher and Donna Haraway.  She aims to inspire her audiences to seek knowledge rather than passively participate in a world of information, as well as reconsider their conceptions of science as rigid and limiting. Her art spans a wide variety of mediums, ranging from chemical reactions to paintings. She is largely self-taught and often testing innovative, non-traditional art materials.
