ARTIST STATEMENT:

The path of where one chooses to go is all eternal. In following what is within, one projects to the world who they are. Arguably, how one chooses to dress one’s own body is a manifestation of what is felt within. However, if numb to inner feelings, one may fall victim to portraying a misleading version of themselves. And so, the paradox of the chosen skin – one’s choice of dress – is profound. Either clothes can emulate one’s inner self or completely cover up who one truly is.

Beneath all that is physical may seem like hollow emptiness. However, it’s the most powerful of all forces; the unseeable, untouchable soul. To allow oneself to become familiar with what is within- something no one else can ever see or feel- is a power. It is the root of all stability in identity.”

BIO:

Betty Laboz (BA ’22) is a junior from New York concentrating on the intersections of human development, mental health, and media. In this context, media ranges from digital media, photography, and modern art to fashion and any form of self-expression. With every media domain she explores, Betty tries to find the connections it has to human development and mental health. In regard to her work, Betty says creating involves tapping into the unconscious and creating purely based on intuition. She believes that is what makes art so pure and authentic.
