OYSTER: Multisensory Experience of Being an NYC Oyster

Two computer monitors placed on pedestals next to each other; the screen on the left shows the artist as captured by the computer's camera; her right hand, lifted, is surrounded by graphics of a school of fish; the screen on the right shows a view of rocks under water; in front of the screen are three metal forks and one metal spoon connected to the computer with wires; a printed instruction on the pedestal shows how to play the game using the spoon and forks as control.

It took less than 100 years for New Yorkers to eat up the oyster population in NY Harbor. However, Oyster reefs provide habitat for hundreds of species, and can protect our city from storm damage — softening the blow of large waves, reducing flooding, and preventing erosion along the shorelines. Non-anthropocentrism, Michelle and I used VR to immerse ourselves in the life of a NYC oyster. Eat Hard, Protect Hard!
