ARTIST STATEMENT

Before writing, Ecuadorian communities conveyed their rich history and culture through fiber arts skills such as weaving and knitting complex designs with string lines. Lines are used to describe time, shape, and connections, and Ecuadorian textiles embody the histories of those who came before. Through this traditional style of art, Bermeo’s work aims to connect the past and present, as well as contribute to the preservation of a resilient culture and history, paving the way for a promising future.

BIO

Natalia Bermeo was born and raised in New York to Ecuadorian migrant parents. The influence of her parents’ cultural backgrounds shaped the way she thought about design. They inspired her to venture out to find out who she was and what she needed to add to the world… Bermeo found her inspiration in the same Ecuadorian influences that surrounded her as a child. With a focus on ethical practices and sustainable design, her work continues to investigate how the line is drawn regarding the value of artesanias.
