ARTIST STATEMENT
NC/NY (in memory) celebrates the collapse of time and place that creates the richness of memory and identity. Playing off the idea of data corruption and how it can cause images to become distorted and combined, these works blur spatial and temporal boundaries. Rejecting the notion that the past must be defined through exclusionary or linear means, images from North Carolina and New York City at significant moments throughout the artist’s own life form a meticulously interwoven tapestry of associations pulled from all reaches of one’s own experience.
BIO
Gary Whitt (b. 2001, Winston Salem, North Carolina) is an interdisciplinary artist and curator based in New York City. Their work examines how we create meaning through material histories and relationships. Working across a large variety of mediums, they seek to combine creative practice, curatorial practice, and systematic analysis to create new pathways for understanding how we construct concrete representations of intersubjective experience. Specific areas of interest include process and display as a medium, material translation and transmutation, history of nature and the human-industrial augmentation of the natural world, the histories of craft and fabrication within art, and projections of the body and identity.
