The Gallatin Galleries is an exhibition space that serves Gallatin students, alumni, faculty, and the broader community through shows that engage in conversations taking place in the arts as well as in the academic, social, and political spheres. The Gallery works to expand the dialogue of ideas with the shows it hosts and invites students, faculty, and the broader public to see the space as a site of exploration of ideas, practices, and creative forms. To see a comprehensive overview of the Gallery’s history and past exhibitions, please view the The Gallatin Galleries Booklet.

MISSION
The Gallatin Galleries’ primary mission is to reflect Gallatin as a space for individualized study, interdisciplinary thought, and a complex web of interests, passions and explorations. It is also a space for the exploration of the interests and passions of students, alumni, and faculty.
As the frame within which contemporary art is considered has expanded, the Gallery works to represent the complexity of contemporary practice, whether traditional in all mediums.
It is the goal of the Gallery to reflect the most current ideas and arguments and to create a space as inclusive as it is representative – not only of the society as it is, but as we hope it to be. In that vein, the Gallery works to have an exhibition program that is as broad-ranging as possible in terms of identity, culture, and context. Since The Gallatin Galleries’ beginning, it has been a host to artists and ideas that come from all sectors of society, focusing as often as possible on the underrepresented.
The Gallery hosts two main types of shows: thematic shows and those focused on student, alumni, and faculty work. These categories usually overlap, as almost all the thematic shows strive to draw from the Gallatin community and from internationally known artists.
HISTORY
The Gallatin Galleries was founded in 2009. The Gallery was given its name to reflect Gallatin and as an echo of Albert Eugene Gallatin’s Gallery and Museum of Living Art (1927-1943).
PEDAGOGY
Pedagogy is a central part of the Gallery philosophy and takes place through class visits, talks, and panel discussions. The Gallery actively engages with Gallatin courses, encouraging faculty and students to use the space as a learning laboratory and a site for discussion of themes and ideas explored in the classroom. The gallery assistants work closely with artists, installers, and curators and propose shows, artists, and ideas.
