Dust to Dust
Dust to Dust is a biofabricated, compostable outfit inspired by NYC’s ecological history, specific to the neighborhoods Maria frequents the most. This piece was originally conceived as a spin-off of Time Landscape, a landscape art piece made up of native NYC plants by Alan Sonfist, and as part of a group performance ‘parade’ showcasing NYC’s hidden histories. Maria incorporated seeds, leaves, and dried flowers into the outfit, intending to eventually plant the outfit and bring back these lost plants. The front of the vest mimics the feather patterns of the broad-winged hawks that previously flew above Maria’s apartment, while the back is inspired by the shells of eastern-painted turtles who once frolicked in what is now Washington Square Park. The skirt is composed of dried leaves and sweetgum balls collected from Time Landscape, along with bioplastic charms meant to evoke the forest floor.
Maria Abdelazim is a senior at Gallatin studying The Materiality of Nature. They are from San Francisco, CA. Maria is interested in exploring the boundaries we construct between ourselves and nature. They especially enjoy working with biomaterials such as bioplastics and mycelium to create usable art-objects, such as clothing and jewelry. Something Maria is always curious about exploring further is materiality, from designing ads that function as mirrors to creating a biofabricated collage dress. No matter the medium or intent of the project, they are dedicated to maintaining sustainable creation practices and curating an interesting and reflective experience for their viewers.
