First fell in love with New York on Barrow Street –
Photography has always been a part of my life. Observing and capturing moments has entered through various ways, through my creative writing and as well as film photography. My pieces here attempt to capture candid and beautiful moments during my first few years in New York City, growing through experience, and the beauty in imperfection that exists within that. These pieces illustrate the lives of my friends, and therefore of myself, in brief and subconsciously. The people surrounding me have deeply impacted me, and therefore my portrayal of them signifies aspects of myself within and my relationship with this world. There are also elements of symmetry, and imperfection within that symmetry. ‘Free’ is also an element seen in all of these pieces, through the acts of dancing, walking, and posing.
Ava Filan is a sophomore at NYU Gallatin. She grew up in the Valley of Los Angeles, California. Her concentration consists of American modernism and literature, historical and global politics, critical and visual theory. She makes pieces that deal with themes of identity, fear of change, shift from stillness to the busy, and a complicated relationship with California—as well as capturing exceptional and particular moments between people, silent exchanges, and glances.
