Lizzie, 2022
Lizzie, 2022 is a cyanotype textile cut apart and sewn into a sweatshirt. Producing the cyanotype itself is a time consuming act filled with intention and care, as is cutting it apart and sewing it into its new host. That intention and care has been transferred from the loving relationships we create as young adults into a physical form. When I wear this sweatshirt I am comforted more than I am in any other clothing because I am constantly reminded of and held by the loving friendships life has to offer. This piece is the first in an ongoing series of clothing pieces centered around community and those who comfort us.
Alex Shapiro is a senior at Gallatin with a concentration in Interactive Art & Play and its Impact on K-12 Public Education and a minor in Studio Art. Alex, a Buffalo, NY native, is best described as an interdisciplinary artist, utilizing photography, cyanotype, ceramics, printmaking, book making, and other various mediums to create experimental art. They are particularly interested in how childhood and nostalgia influence our understanding of art when portrayed in tandem with mediums that are often seen as crafts rather than art. Additionally, a core aspect of their art making is the use of tactical elements. They attempt to make every piece they create interactive so the audience feels invited in as an active participant. As a result, texture and hands-on elements are prominent in their work.
