Investigations in Porcelain
statement:
XY’s work aims to explore the tension between the simultaneous vilification of China and the concept of orientalism that the Western world projects onto it. Trapped in the narrative of a country at once “left behind” but too far ahead of its Western counterparts, its children are faced with a conflicting legacy. Inspired by elements of Chinese cultural values, XY’s Porcelain Girl questions the objectification of immigrants, China’s mass-production of exports, and the cheapening of labor as she is faithfully reproduced time and time again. Porcelain Girl draws parallels between XY’s experience and that of the larger diaspora, the Confucian fatherland, and the fragility of a torn identity.
