ARTIST STATEMENT:

Like Treason?

“Our piece “Like Treason?” came to be from a desire Eloise and I had to explore the topics of our identity, queerness, and sense of belonging, highlighting the experience of being connected to specific domestic struggles while no longer being a part of them in our immediate environment. We also wanted to explore themes that are more personal—like family, disappointment, queerness, and an unshakable feeling of being a traitor by simply living our lives authentically. Hence, we sat together and created a piece that explores this through a dialogue between four characters—the selves and the others, representing our internal dialogues and the desire to separate ourselves from the scary feelings and questions we may have. In the rehearsal room, this piece grew to become a truly collaborative effort with our cast adding their voices and personal experiences to enrich the concept and make it truly come to life. Together, in this journey of questions, we arrived at a single answer: that even if we are unable to understand or make sense of our feelings and insecurities—the questions that come from them are worth asking, especially when it is hard to do so.”
