ARTIST STATEMENT:
Before each performance pre-COVID, DCA would do a short improv exercise as audiences were filing into the theater. This is something that really brought our group together while also helping to confuse the boundaries of pre-show audience/dancer expectations and serving as a fun on-stage warm up experience. During COVID, we have tried in a number of ways to recreate this experience virtually, including hosting various fully virtual Improv Jams in 2020. Through GAF this semester, DCA is branching out by using the theater space and gallery to have socially distanced improv that the rest of the community can join from their own homes. The only pre-planned component of this performance is the curated playlist of music and a guided improvisational exercise unbeknownst to the audience. As we move into the next phase of the pandemic with the roll out of vaccines, we hope to improvise as a way of exploring the theme of ‘metamorphosis’ — something we are doing for our own showcase as well — as we reconnect with old spaces, like the theater and gallery, under these new circumstances.
BIO:
Dancers/Choreographers Alliance (DCA) connects student dancers with student choreographers to encourage the artistic process and build a community of movers. We welcome all dancers, regardless of background, technical level, or experience.
The hard work of DCA’s E-Board members makes the club’s semesterly showcases possible. Currently, the organization is run by a team of 7 students across all schools at NYU, and is headed by Sylvia Coopersmith (Gallatin ‘21) and Sanjana Bhambhani(CAS ‘22). Avital Kricher (Gallatin ‘22) runs our social media, Aleah Tischler (Gallatin ‘23) designs our programs and graphics, Maia Virgil (Tisch ‘22) organizes a multitude of dance-related events throughout the semester, Juliana Maciel (Gallatin ‘22) makes sure we’re in check with budget, and Neyl Loukil-Borras (Stern ‘22) handles scheduling, logistics and administrative tasks.
