ARTIST STATEMENT:
“The Modern Woman’s Guide to the Holidays is a visual critique of contemporary feminism utilizing themes of violence, maternity, and lust. I was inspired by the work of Camille Paglia, Anna Biller, Andy Kaufman, and Cindy Sherman. This film satirizes contemporary filmmaking styles as well as the archetype of the female heroine. I am interested in exploring feminist idealizations in my work by challenging the hypocrisy of female empowerment. Similarly, I wanted to juxtapose the intrigue of female hysteria with the inherent vulnerability of masculinity. Engaging with those power dynamics allowed me to consider the ways in which the gender binary ignores male trauma and hyper fixates on feminine fragility. With the help of my talented collaborators, I was able to capture an authentic and improvised exploration of violence and play. This film, shot in a single afternoon, was a wildly fun experiment in trust and improvisation.”
