Internship, Curatorial Affairs
The Museum of the City of New York fosters understanding of the distinctive nature of urban life in the world’s most influential metropolis. It engages visitors by celebrating, documenting, and interpreting the city’s past, present, and future.
This Curatorial Internship will immerse the selected undergraduate student in the Museum’s representation of the diverse history and culture of New York City and its five boroughs. Under the supervision of the Manager of Curatorial Projects, the intern will support curatorial administration and be exposed to the exhibition development process.
Duties include:
Object information and data entry for upcoming exhibition content lists;
Proofread text;
Maintaining gallery spaces for exhibitions currently on view;
The internship will be more administrative than research focused, however there will be
opportunities for curatorial research as well;
Other exhibitions development and administrative tasks as assigned;
Learning Objectives & Outcomes:
Develop a working understanding of the Museum’s history and city museum practices;
Comprehend the roles and functions of all departments working within the Museum;
Perform organization within exhibition content lists and object-based research;
Insight into the Museum’s exhibition development, curatorial operations, and workflow;
Qualifications:
Must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate university;
Be highly detail-oriented, organized, and willing to work as a part of a team;
Have passion and excitement for New York City and its history, culture, and arts;
Knowledge of MS Teams, Outlook. Helpful: Adobe suite: Acrobat, Photoshop, InDesign;
Helpful: Spanish language skills.
Additional Details:
The intern must be available 6 or more business hours per week (9-5) at the Museum’s 103 rd Street location. A fixed work schedule that accommodates class schedule can be arranged. A commitment of at least one semester (roughly 14 weeks) is required.
This is an internship for academic credit, which must be arranged through the student’s home academic institution.
