Freedom for Immigrants is an abolitionist organization that envisions a world without prisons or cages of any kind. We work to abolish immigration incarceration, recognizing we are part of a broader movement fighting for our freedom at the intersection of mass incarceration, immigration enforcement, and the deprivation of Black, brown, and Indigenous people’s autonomy. To empower our communities, we organize alongside and follow the leadership of currently and formerly incarcerated immigrants. We recognize our work is necessarily tied to broader efforts to eradicate white supremacy and the systems that sustain oppression. By cultivating the community-centered solutions that breathe life into our collective liberation, we actively build a future in which all people can move freely and thrive.

About Freedom for Immigrants:
Freedom for Immigrants (FFI) is an abolitionist organization that envisions a world without prisons or cages of any kind.
About the Internship:
FFI seeks a highly-motivated and dynamic Communications Intern who’s eager to apply their ideas and skills, while growing their professional communications experience. This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience working in an in-house communications and public relations department of an advocacy organization focused at the intersection of immigration, anti-incarceration, and abolition. The Communications Intern will play a key role in the operations of FFI’s Communications Department, gaining valuable experience working alongside the Senior Communications Manager on special projects and day-to-day management of the organization’s external communications work. The Communications Intern will have opportunities for growth in the following areas: experience working in a nonprofit press shop, including management of media lists, tracking reporter inquiries and outreach, and drafting pitches; drafting copy and graphic design elements for social media and other digital channels; developing strategy, messaging, and talking points for narrative change campaigns and special projects; and supporting with day-to-day department operations such as website management.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Support with FFI’s earned media operations, including assisting in drafting press releases and statements, tracking reporter inquiries and outreach, updating media lists, and supporting with drafting answers to reporters, as well as pitches;
Draft and edit social media content, website copy, and other writing tasks as needed;
Help manage a communications and social media content calendar;
Support with responding to all other public relations inquiries made to the organization, including from researchers, social media followers, and others;
Create design elements for use in social media and website content;
Update FFI’s website, at times drafting new website content and editing or reorganizing existing content;
Work on narrative change campaigns and projects with the Senior Communications Manager and other FFI staff, participating in strategizing, brainstorming, and problem solving;
Use analytics and measurement tools to track success of posts, emails, and other projects and to make data-driven decisions for future projects;
Collaborate with other departments to push FFI’s priorities forward as they arise and as appropriate.
