Part-time position
Industry: Architecture
Keywords: Communications, Copywriting, Editing, Research
Description of Position: Part-time (not an internship)
Project Assistant or Associate Editor
Urban Omnibus, the online publication of The Architectural League, seeks an intellectually curious and engaged individual with a deep interest in the design and politics of the built environment to join its small editorial team.
This is a part-time, staff position, to be defined as Project Assistant or Associate Editor, depending on experience and qualifications. The position combines editorial production — copyediting, fact-checking, image research and production, WordPress — with research and development of new features and initiatives. Among other projects, the Project Assistant or Associate Editor will contribute to our ongoing special series on remediation and how we live in, build on, and design for a city of pervasive toxicity.
The ideal candidate will have an abiding interest in the makings, meanings, and experience of New York City’s physical environment, and the contribution of everyone — from professional designers to people going about their everyday lives — to the collective work of citymaking. Excellent writing and editing skills, with attention to detail in language and elsewhere, are essential, as is enthusiasm for research, from scrolling scholarly databases to phoning strangers. Documentary or graphic design skills are highly desirable. Experience with audience/community engagement also a plus. We strongly encourage people of color, women, LGBTQ individuals, people with disabilities, and others who may contribute to the diversity of perspectives to apply.
Candidates should be available 16 to 20 hours per week and be able to commit to a 9 to 12 month period. Responsibilities and compensation depending on experience and qualifications: $20/hour for Project Assistant, $25/hour for Associate Editor. The Architectural League is unable to provide benefits for part-time positions. While The Architectural League is currently working remotely, a combination of remote and on-site work is anticipated for the fall. Applicants must be based in New York City and authorized to work in the US. Candidates should be available to begin by September 20, 2021.
