Mural/Street Artists Wanted: Call for Artist Proposals

  • The Backyard Mural Project is organized by the NYU Office of Faculty Housing & Residential Services as part of our ongoing Happenings community programs for residents living in faculty housing. Connect with Us @nyufacultyhousing

We are seeking artists proposals for a mural to be installed in The Backyard, which is a private lawn within the courtyard of Washington Square Village. The theme this year is “Local Flora and Fauna”.

  • The artwork will be created in summer 2022 and will remain on view through the calendar year of 2022, pending site and weather conditions.
  • Selected artist will receive a $1,500 artist fee and $500 stipend to go towards materials.
  • We provide a 40 foot long wall (40′ L x 4′ H) comprised of 4’x8’ plywood sheets (1/2” thick), prepped with primer, installed with zip ties.
  • Mural location: The Backyard, 3 Washington Square Village, off Bleecker Street near LaGuardia Place

The deadline for submission of proposal: June 10, 2022.

Our 2019 Backyard program featured  Nolan Grünwald’s “Proud New Yorker” in celebration of Stonewall50 and installed near “Banners of Pride” made by residents and Children’s Museum of Art.

To apply, please submit the following information via this form:

  1. Provide artist name and contact information including your mailing address, email address and phone number.
  2. Upload images and/or video of at least three (3) projects that document your previous work. Multiple views/detail images a plus. Each file must be no larger than 10 MB in size. Maximum number of files: 10. A valid Gmail address is required.
  3. Provide at least three (3) URL links featuring images and/or video documentation of your previous work including name of sponsoring organization, venue, location, description, and dates.
  4. List and/or provide link to artist bio and/or CV.
  5. Submit an artist statement discussing your body of work, creative process and the audience for your work.
  6. Submit a proposal for a new artwork reflecting this year’s theme of “Local Flora and Fauna”.
  7. Detail your work plan including planned materials, timeline for completion and any other technical details.
  8. Provide a professional reference including name, title, organization, email address and phone number.
