Pride Art Party
Saturday, June 15, 2019
The Backyard, Washington Square Village
Our residents celebrated Pride Month with a family friendly art party in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, a period of sustained community activism that ushered in the modern LGBTQ+ movement that has shaped the downtown cultural map ever since.
Residents create DIY rainbow flags with their own personal messages of inclusivity and love while learning about the meaning of each color in the Pride Flag. Activity led by Children’s Museum of the Arts teaching artists and afterwards our flags were strung up in a collaborative banner that makes a statement.
As a continued celebration of Pride after the party is over, our community banner hung in the Backyard along the western driveway between Buildings 1 and 3 for the month.
New York based visual artist Nolan Grünwald worked daylong on June 15 creating an outdoor painting featuring vivid chromatics and fantastical imagery and the resulting Pride mural radiant in positivity remained on view throughout the summer.
Nolan Grünwald’s exhibitions include Spring/Break Art Fair, Los Angeles and Collective Art Tank, Asbury Park among others. Nolan is a member of the Public Service Artists Guild and has created a public artwork for EBC High School for Public Service, Bushwick. He is represented by Kathleen Cullen Fine Arts, Brooklyn. He holds a BFA, Art and Design, Philosophy, Alfred University.
This event is part of our Downtown Culture Series featuring cultural traditions celebrated in and around our neighborhood. New York City was host to WorldPride in 2019.
