I’m a Brazilian film critic, scholar, director, screenwriter, editor, and sound editor based in Brooklyn, New York. I’m currently a Ph.D. candidate in the Cinema Studies department at New York University, and an adjunct professor at the Film and Media Studies department at Columbia University, Department of Dramatic Writing at NYU, and Department of Film and Media Studies at Hunter College. I hold an M.F.A. in Screenwriting from Columbia University with a Fulbright/CAPES fellowship, an M.Phil in Cinema Studies by New York University, and a B.A. in Communications (Journalism and Cinema) from Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio).
Since December 2007, I started publishing film criticism at the Brazilian online magazine Cinética, and was its editor-in-chief between 2010 and 2017. I have also published essays on film and visual arts in a number of books, magazines, and catalogs of festivals around the world, such as the Criterion Collection, Film Quarterly, Film Comment, Cinema Tropical, Berlinale, Kino Lorber, Filmmaker Magazine, Filme Cultura, Aniki, among others. This website collects my writings in both English and Portuguese, and is designed to be a permanent work-in-progress. Republished content might have been revised for clarity, but no additions will be made unless otherwise noted.
I have also worked with directors such as Eryk Rocha, Thomas Elsaesser, Paula Gaitán, Gabriel Mascaro, José Eduardo Belmonte, Fellipe Barbosa, Fabio Baldo, Bruno Safadi, Sergio Bianchi, Daniel Lentini, Raphael Erichsen, Ramon Porto Mota, Juliano Gomes, Leonardo Bittencourt, Marc Ohrem-Leclef, Maurílio Martins, Raul Arthuso, and Thiago Taves Sobreiro. There is more information about each project here.
In my free time, I also occasionally write music, record and perform as Driving Music.
