I am looking forward to joining Dana Khromov and Robert Cargni on Monday, November 9, for a virtual discussion of Marília Rocha’s Aboio (Cattle Callers, 2005). The film will have a virtual screening as part of a series programmed by Robert Cargni for the Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Watch the trailer here, and see the information on how to attend the event here, or below.
There are also two noteworthy virtual events promoted by the department of Cinema Studies at NYU this week. Today, at 5pm EST, the great Josslyn Luckett will join Michele Prettyman (Fordham), and Jon-Sesrie Goff (The Flaherty) for a discussion around a selection of short films by the LA Rebellion. RSVP here.
And tomorrow, the folks at Limite are holding a screening of Luiz Rosemberg Filho’s terrific Imagens – a long-lost masterpiece of Brazilian “marginal cinema” – following a conversation between Richard Peña and film preservationist José Quental. I wrote about Luiz Rosemberg Filho’s passing in May 2019, for Cinema Tropical, and had the pleasure of introducing a memorial screening of his late film Guerra do Paraguay at the Anthology Film Archives later that year, also promoted by Cinema Tropical. He’s a remarkable filmmaker, and Imagens is one of his most unsettling, radical works. RSVP to the event here.
