Film Screening: El camino de regreso a la maloca

Join us next Thursday for the screening of The Way Back to the Maloca, a short documentary film on the Murui-Muina people of the Colombian Amazon, presented by its director, Oscar Aponte (CUNY, History), in conversation with Professor Sinclair Thomson (NYU History)

Thursday, October 19, 6 PM
King Juan Carlos Center Room 324, 53 Washington Square South, NYC

In the heart of the Amazon rainforest, the Murui-Muina people of Leguízamo, Colombia, defend their culture and traditions after surviving the genocide perpetrated by rubber company Casa Arana. In a sound and visual journey through the rivers and jungles of Amazonia, The Way Back to the Maloca documents the life of the Murui-Muina people in night ceremonies, agricultural plots, malocas, classrooms, traditional dances, and daily conversations. Will the Murui-Muina people succeed in rescuing their ancestral knowledge and passing it down to the new generations?
