Going off the grid for your research and need to collect accurate location data? NYUAD’s Center for Academic Technology now has 8 Garmin eTrex 22x devices for checkout.
The devices have a standard 3-day loan period, but users can make requests for longer checkouts on a case-by-case basis. The checkout includes a 32GB microSD card and two AA batteries, but when going into the field, make sure to pack extra AA batteries just in case.
These devices can connect to either GPS or GLONASS satellites and have a position accuracy of 3 meters. The devices should strictly be used for data collection as the road and topographic basemaps will not be updated.
The librarian for geospatial data services can offer guidance on usage for data collection and export of data to a geographic information system. Throughout the academic year, check the NYUAD GIS events calendar for workshops on using GPS.
