JOURNALISM CROSSROADS

This project is a two-year collaboration between faculty and students of the American Journalism Online master’s program at NYU’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute.

We used the “as told to” format pioneered by American writer Studs Terkel, which follows key journalistic concepts such as fairness and accuracy while keeping a subject’s voice as intact as possible. The stories we featured are not direct transcripts of interviews: Passages and lines have been moved to focus on specific topics, avoid repetitions, and keep the narrative flowing. Dates, names, numbers, locations, and other facts mentioned by our subjects have been fact-checked. Our writers followed up with their sources to clarify comments and add context where needed.

Some of the media pros we profiled changed jobs after they were first interviewed. The editors have noted these moves in the intros.
