We used the “as told to” format pioneered by American writer Studs Terkel, which follows key journalistic concepts such as fairness and accuracy while keeping a subject’s voice as intact as possible. The stories we featured are not direct transcripts of interviews: Passages and lines have been moved to focus on specific topics, avoid repetitions, and keep the narrative flowing. Dates, names, numbers, locations, and other facts mentioned by our subjects have been fact-checked. Our writers followed up with their sources to clarify comments and add context where needed.
Some of the media pros we profiled changed jobs after they were first interviewed. The editors have noted these moves in the intros.
Marino has been an adjunct professor at the AJO program since 2020. He pitched this project and served as its senior editor. Marino has 20 years of journalism experience in English and Spanish-language media. He divides his time between Florida and New York, and currently leads learning efforts at digital outlet Business Insider.
Manansala graduated from the AJO program at NYU in 2021. She is a producer and video journalist for Business Insider, and was also part of the inaugural cohort for the Vox Media Writer’s Workshop, among many other industry honors. As assistant editor, Manansala edited all first drafts of this project, mentored our writers, and helped with overall project management.
Chang is an NYU AJO alumna (2021-2022) and former attorney. She is a freelance writer based in New York City and is currently pursuing an MFA in creative writing with the University of British Columbia. She has contributed to the “Just Security” podcast, a weekly show dedicated to analyzing breaking news in national security and foreign policy.
Cheung is a student of NYU’s AJO program and lives in Denver. She decided to pursue a career in journalism following the repression of pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, her home town. Cheung reported on local and international stories on the program’s news site, the Click. She hopes to continue providing first-hand accounts of voices not often heard in media.
Corr is an NYU AJO alumna (2019-2022) and former sports reporter, anchor, and host for NBC Sports. Past assignments include multiple Super Bowls, the Summer Olympics (which led to an Emmy win), the Westminster Dog Show, MLB/NBA All-Star Games, and college football. She worked at SNY as a host/reporter for the New York Mets. Corr lives in Florida with her husband and three children.
Davis is an NYU AJO alumnus (2022-2023) and a full-time freelancer based in Denver. His writing has appeared in publications like Forbes, Business Insider, and Capital & Main, to name a few. His works have earned recognition from the Society of Professional Journalists, the National Association of Real Estate Editors, the Society for Advanced Business Writers and Editors, and the Colorado Press Association.
Meincke is an NYU AJO alumnus (2021-2023) and a writer, broadcast journalist, and editor based in Los Angeles. He’s covered the fall of Roe v. Wade, homelessness in Washington, D.C., and swing-state elections. Meincke also contributed research to an investigation on Russian war crimes by the Guardian, and helped with research on Pulitzer Prize-winner Eliza Griswold’s work for the New Yorker.
Benge is the web developer/administrator at the NYU Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute. She maintains the department’s websites as designer, developer, and systems administrator, as a support to the Institute’s digital publishing presence. She continuously builds and heads new projects and initiatives for faculty and staff.
Gould is a designer and creative director specializing in visual storytelling. She is an alumna of Ohio University’s Scripps Visual Communications school and was previously the design director for Business Insider. She is currently the Director of Graphics for The Athletic.
