Plastic Fantastic!?

June 12, 2021

something i found interesting

I never noticed places in the UAE trying to be sustainable and eco friendly until recently when twice in one day I came across a product that will help instead of harm the planet. First, Virgin Megastore’s biodegradable bags. They worked towards creating something that is natural and nontoxic to humans and animals as well as something that can be compostable or even resued due to its strength and durability. After talking to a Virgin employee I learned that to get a bag you needed to pay 1dhs because they wanted to reduce the plastic being sold around us, compostable or not, as well as fund for the production of more of these compostable bags.

***VIRGIN STATEMENT***

“”We’ve just replaced all our plastic shopping bags with Bio-Cassava bags in our UAE stores. We’re always trying to implement initiatives to help save the planet; not to mention doing business for good, this is just the beginning. Plans are already underway to implement this initiative across our other stores in the region.

In partnership with AVANI, these bags are purely 100% natural, biodegradable, compostable, and certified non-toxic to humans and animals. Basing their top of the line facilities in Bali, Indonesia AVANI’s Bio-Cassava bags have been developed through extensive research & renewable resources such as plants. AVANI has evolved to become a one-stop-shop solution for eco-friendly needs not only in Bali but internationally.””

The second product I discovered recently was the sugar cane straws being sold to companies in the UAE from Dubai. I discovered this at a resturant in Abu Dhabi where plastic was not used. After researching the company that sells this, I found out they sell a lot of other things that would have been a one time use plastic product.
These are the straws:

This is their compostable packaging:

It was nice seeing places in Abu Dhabi take initiative to creating a plastic free world even though it is a slow process it is still change that is witnessed and hopefully will be copied by other brands, resturants and companies. Whenever I was given one of these two products it always lead to discussion about the product and how proud they are to contributing to saving the planet. I thought this would be an interesting subject to share because I didn’t notice the good being done around me until I studied about the topic in this class. Now I see small and big companies/businessess try hard to positively contribute and it is definitely creating a ripple effect where more and more people are becoming aware and following through with helping save our planet.
