Advanced knowledge and begins to reach professional growth both culturally and clinically in Occupational Therapy.
Demonstrate how advanced knowledge of cultural diversity impacts clinical outcomes in stroke rehabilitation.
The artifacts I used to demonstrate how cultural diversity impacts clinical outcomes in stroke rehabilitation all represent some of my most meaningful experiences during this doctoral program.
These artifacts represent my awareness of the impact of cultural diversity. My travel opportunities providing services to underserved people in the Philippines and taking a global, nutrition course in Mexico really made me think about how important it is for me to have hands-on experience in other countries and with diverse populations. Reading the research about the importance of cultural sensitivity is important, but these real-life experiences immersed in other cultures were powerful experiences influencing my own awareness of the need to address culture in my patient treatment.
In my own hospital, I work with clients from diverse backgrounds. I think that these experiences have shifted my approach to treatment and that this will impact my patients’ outcomes. During my international experience, I learned to adapt to various environments. Again, these real-life experiences turned out to be very important in changing my ability to provide interdisciplinary, culturally sensitive care.
My goal was realized by my diverse cultural experiences with my knowledge of stroke rehabilitation. And did this by taking a research course in stroke rehabilitation. In order to become knowledgeable about different types of settings for stroke rehabilitation, I took several CEU courses such as a research course in stroke rehabilitation and ICU stroke liberation courses where I learned more about stroke rehabilitation as an occupational therapist. Based on what I learned, I was able to work with a multidisciplinary team to publish an article in the hospital and create a handout.
