Visual Metaphor Proposal

I.   Project Title:

The Seven Ages of Man

II. Team Members:

Frank Yucheng Bao/ Mia Mingyin Xue

III.  Concept | Storyline:

1). Who are you going to interview? Or What is the piece (article, poem, story) for the narrative voice-over?

The Seven Ages of Man (“All the World’s a stage”)

2). What’s the story about?

Presenting a person’s life process which contains seven stages: infant, lover, soldier, justice, pantaloon, and at last, sans everything.

3). What kind of style/aesthetics are you going to pursue?

Montage(kinds of/maybe/don’t know/ trying to)

Juxtaposition

Long-shoot (several scenes)

IV. Execution Plan:

1). What equipment are you going to use when shooting the movie? (cell phone, DSLR camera, sound recorder, stabilizer..)

  • Shooting: DSLR Camera/ Cell phone/ Stabilizer
  • Voice Collect: sound recorder (Tascam)
  • Lighting devices
  • Canvas (to project the shadow)

2). Which locations will it be shot at? When is it? Day time/night/unknown? Why?

  • Locations: Dark Studio, Street
  • Time: Thanksgiving holiday and next week
  • We are trying to present “life is a stage” by mixing reality scenes and abstract scenes. Utilizing light and shadows, we plan to shoot the projecting shadow to present parts of our concept.

3). What are some challenges you might encounter and how will you prepare?

  • Thinking about what kinds of metaphors we want to create. The relationship between narratives and the scenes.
  • Also the shooting part, we are considering the location we choose which can fit our narratives.
  • We also intended to use shadow to present some abstract meaning, but it is difficult in execution because we don’t have much previous experience.

4). How will you collaborate? How will you divide work? (Gantt Chart)

Full Content:

All the world’s a stage,

And all the men and women merely players.

They have their exits and their entrances,

And one man in his time plays many parts,

His acts being seven ages.

At first the infant,

Mewling and puking in the nurse’s arms.

And then the whining schoolboy, with his satchel,

And shining morning face, creeping like snail,

Unwillingly to school.

And then the lover,

Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad made to his mistress’ eyebrow.

Then a soldier, Full of strange oaths, and bearded like the pard,

Jealous in honor, sudden and quick in quarrel,

Seeking the bubble reputation,

Even in the cannon’s mouth.

And then the justice,

In fair round belly with good capon lined,

With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,

Full of wise saws and modern instances.

And so he plays his part.

The sixth age shifts into the lean and slippered pantaloon,

With spectacles on nose and pouch on side.

His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide for his shrunk shank,

And his big manly voice,

Turning again toward childish treble, pipes, and whistles in his sound.

Last scene of all,

That ends this strange eventful history,

Is second childishness and mere oblivion,

Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.
