I found Tan’s writing to be very relatable. Her experience of growing with parents who didn’t speak the language perfectly is what I experienced. Sometimes it was hard, and even embarrassing, but it’s not anymore. I have found that people have become a lot more accepting of non-English speakers. My family speaks many Spanish at home with sprinkles of English. Or sometimes the conversation is split in half when one person speaks entirely in Spanish and the other responds in English. But I differ with Tan in the sense that, at my family’s request, I speak a higher level of English so that they can familiarize and learn words that they will hear on a regular basis. And I also ask of them to speak a high level of Spanish with me and even Portuguese so that I may learn it even better.
