I grew up speaking Mandarin in China, but after I immigrated to Canada in third grade, I picked up English rather quickly. Having lived all of my youth and teenage years in Canada, I would consider English to be my main language, part of my identity.
There are many languages I would like to learn, including French, Spanish, and German. Having grown up in China and being around a lot of the Asian culture, I feel like I want to learn more about Western cultures, and learning their languages is one way to gain insight and understand these fascinating societies.
