Our Code of Conduct exists to highlight essential elements of an ethical and responsible environment in which the central educational goals of NYU–and the Winter Institute in Digital Humanities–can be met effectively and efficiently.
The Winter Institute in Digital Humanities is dedicated to creating a safe, respectful and collegial environment for the benefit of everyone who attends, and for the advancement of research and scholarship. We recognize that the free space in which we meet is a special one and we are committed to keeping it inclusive and productive for all participants. We also recognize the importance of respect for, and compliance with, the law of the country in which we are located.
We know that the best problem-solving and critical thinking happens when people with a wide array of experiences and perspectives come together to work in comfort and safety as peers. We therefore expect participants in the WIDH community to help create thoughtful and respectful environments where that interaction can take place.
To that end, we strive to:
- protect an environment conducive to intellectual pursuits.
- respect the rights of others and the University’s resources and spaces.
- ensure that our event is free from harassment of any of kind.
- communicate with each other in ways that respect difference, while showing compassion, empathy and understanding, instead of assuming that we are “all on the same page.”
- carry these commitments beyond the face-to-face or communal spaces, into online venues.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding this code of conduct, or if you wish to discuss any experiences you have had where you feel the code of conduct has not been followed, please contact either of the organizers, David Joseph Wrisley or Beth Russell.
