A Letter from the Editor – Patrick Spauster

Dear Readers,

As we welcome cooler weather and a new cohort of Wagner students, it’s my great pleasure to welcome you back for another year with the Wagner Planner. We have big plans this year: introducing new voices, using more data and visualization, and resuming the Wagner Planner Podcast.

I’m honored to succeed Charley Cohen and continue growing the Planner as Editor-in-Chief. I build on some of our team’s great work under his leadership: launching a podcast, introducing new types of content, and expanding our pool of writers. I hope to build on that momentum.

Some of the great joys of studying at Wagner are working alongside brilliant peers who care deeply about cities and experiencing the realities of urban challenges in one of the world’s great metropolises. Today our cities face great challenges: homelessness, housing affordability, crumbling infrastructure, and climate change. Our writers bring critical perspectives from the classroom, the workplace, and the field to tell compelling urban planning stories. I’m exceedingly grateful and excited to publish more of their work this year.

But this year we hope to not just publish from our pool of staff writers, but open the Wagner Planner’s platform to all students. If you have an idea for a story, pitch us here. From a fascinating class project to an emerging planning issue encountered in the workplace, we want student work from inside and outside the classroom in front of the practitioners, policymakers, and professionals who help make cities work.

Still, expect to hear from our writing staff who will continue to push great content, blog series, profiles, op-eds, and analysis. If you’re a new or returning student interested in joining the permanent staff, please apply here – applications will be due at the end of September.

Great writing is on the way as our team regroups for the fall semester. In the meantime, be on the lookout for the next installment of the Wagner Planner podcast from our Audio Editor, Ben Listman, in the coming weeks.

You can follow along by following the Wagner Planner on Twitter and LinkedIn. You can reach me directly at ps4375@nyu.edu with any and all questions.

Here’s to a great year.

Sincerely,

Patrick Spauster
