WP2WS Project C – B(I)oom

CONCEPT

This project is a continuation of my Project B concept. I wanted to create a scroll-based interactive narrative about growth, challenge, and rising up from the challenge. It’s also like a life cycle, where there is growth, death, and rebirth. I kept the motif of a flower, which I had in Project B as well. In this project, I wanted to focus more on the interactions and visuals, as well as add more of a narrative.

WP2WS 10 – Interactions with ML5

INSPIRATION

Trying to build upon my concept development on digital preservation, I feel like the example Body, Movement, Language: AI Sketches With Bill T. Jones from Google is something I want to explore. In this project, the words move with the movement of your body, so a sentence follows the flow of your movements. I think it would be interesting to use the text from people’s tweets or Instagram captions as something that the user can interact with.

WP2WS 10 – Concept Development & Case Study: Virtual Self and Other

After reading the article “When you see yourself in a virtual body, you adopt some of its features”, I found it interesting that people who were in other people’s bodies tended to perform better. For instance, they did an experiment where a person would share their problems with a virtual copy of themselves or with Sigmund Freud, but both the copy and Freud were just the person. So essentially, they were talking to themselves and not someone else. However, the people in the experiment were able to solve their problems better when they were talking to themselves as Freud because he is a famous psychologist who is known for solving personal issues. Another example in the article is how people perform better using Albert Einstein as an avatar, but this is only the case when the person had low self-esteem. All of these findings make me wonder how people perceive themselves in reality as opposed to in the virtual space.

WP2WS 09 – Navigation

PROCESS

I first began by implementing the different controls into my midterm project. By playing around with the different controls, I can determine which one I want to explore further. The first one I explored was fly control:

I felt like this was a fun way to explore the landscape. However, I realized that if I incorporate navigation, I would have to tweak the opacity levels again because depending on the distance, the landscape would disappear.

WP2WS Project B | You-topia in a Bubble

INSPIRATION

I took some inspiration from my capstone, which revolves around video games and escapism. I wanted to take the concept of escaping into another reality that’s a peaceful space for people to relax and not worry. As for visual inspiration, I am particularly drawn to Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Studio Ghibli films such as Howl’s Moving Castle.

WP2WS W04 – Structure Building

INSPIRATION

I was looking into patterns that occur in nature, because it’s fascinating how such complex patterns and structures form naturally. Things like nautilus shell, snowflakes, fractals in the ground, and butterfly wings. Going off my first two assignments, I want to continue to explore butterflies and make it generative, kind of like the teamLab exhibit. Since teamLab also uses 3D for their exhibits, I  think it would be interesting to explore their concepts and designs.

WP2WS W03 – Future Snowman

INSPIRATION

Isamu Noguchi is a Japanese-American sculptor known for his blend of Western and Eastern traditions. His sculptures and landscape works are quite minimal, as he uses natural materials and explores the relationship between art and environment. I drew inspiration for a few of his pieces, which can be seen at this website. I was also able to visit the Noguchi Museum when I was in New York City.

The lamps are also quite minimal and interesting as a shape to explore:

WP2WS W02 – Cell at Work

Since last week I wasn’t able to explore the butterfly inspiration I got from teamLab, I decided to take the chance to do it in this assignment. Once again, I wasn’t able to produce what I initially imagined,  but it still turned out to be fun to interact with and look at. The final product reminds me of molecules moving around. The references I used for this assignment are:

While the final code doesn’t use TheCodingTrain’s code for the butterfly, I did take inspiration from it in my first draft.
