CGDD W4 – 2D Game Structure

Flowchart of game system

LEVEL STRUCTURE AND CHALLENGES

Since our game is based on the anime Made in Abyss, we decided to structure the game level on the map of the Abyss, where one level would be four layers. The goal is for the character Reg to reach the fourth layer where his friend Nanachi is. For the gameplay time to be about 20 minutes long, each layer will take about 5 minutes to complete. The level of challenge will increase the deeper the character goes into the Abyss. Each layer has a corresponding monster, which again increases in difficulty.

When Reg encounters challenges, he can avoid fighting the monster or confront it. In order to avoid the monster, Reg will have to use his extendable arms to swing away. If he decides to fight it, he will also have to use his arms in order to attack the monsters. The challenge in Layer 1 is a monster called Silkfang. If the Reg encounters this monster, the monster will trap him in webs, making it hard to safely escape.

In Layer 2, the monster is called Corpse Weeper, where it will pick up Reg and throw him off the platform. In order to recover, he will have to use his arms to grab onto the edge of a platform and pull himself up. In the first two layers, Reg has the option to avoid fighting the monsters. However, in the last two layers, in order to increase the difficulty, Reg will have no choice but to fight.

In Layer 3, the monster is called Crimson Splitjaw. The damage this monster takes is a lot less compared to the other two monsters, so it would take more time and energy for Reg to defeat it. On the other hand, the damage Reg would receive is a lot more compared to the other two monsters.

In the final layer, the monster is called Orb Piercer. If attacked by this monster, Reg would slowly be poisoned to death and has to defeat the monster before he dies. So, when attacked, there will be a timer of how much time he has left to kill the monster before dying. If he dies, he will have to restart from the beginning of the layer.
