After reading three designated readings, my understanding of interaction has changed. Now, I think interaction is a loop process of listening/receiving orders, thinking/processing, and speaking/making actions between two participants. Moreover, others can not interrupt or try to help interpret the content during the interaction.
“Echo Planet” is a sound visualization device designed for hearing loss children. In this case, even though these children can not hear any sounds, they can still see and feel the variation of sounds. In the video, we can see that children took turns shouting and making sounds, making the screen keep changing images. In the end, it looks like a beautiful blossom flower or marvelous fireworks.
This project meets my definition of interaction. The children made sounds and the device heard them. After thinking(processing), the device visualizes the sounds to help them experience the sounds. Most importantly, the device would form different moving images when sensing different sounds, which means it is automatic rather than using fixed code. Furthermore, the adults did not ask the children to say some particular words, so there was no interference. Overall, “Echo Planet” is an interactive design project.

“INSIDEOUT” is so-called an immersive new media interactive experience device. When visitors stepped inside, they could experience the weather in Scotland. By spectacular changes of sounds and lights, people can see and listen from drizzles to thunderstorms and sunshine. Nevertheless, even though this project is very immersive, it did not align with my definition of interaction. No matter how many people are inside the house, what they do, and what they say, the device just kept performing. Under this circumstance, “INSIDEOUT” did not change the action or show the differences, which means it only speaks. Due to a lack of the process of listening and thinking, this is not an interactive artwork for me.
