New Media Art

Part 1

As defined by the author, New Media Art is described as projects that make use of emerging media technologies and are concerned with the cultural, political, and aesthetic possibilities of these tools. For me, I would describe New Media Art as any art that is created with or uses new media technologies.

8 years after the text was published, the first Apple Pencil was released to the world. After the Apple Pencil was released, a lot of drawing apps were also released. A common app that people use to draw is called Procreate. It was first released for free and now it is a paid app. The combination of the drawing app and Apple Pencil allowed people to create digital art easily. This new invention allows people to draw anywhere and anytime without having to spend a lot of money.

Part 2

Olia Lialina is a Moscow-born and Germany-based net artist born on May 4, 1971. She is known for her browser art piece called My Boyfriend Came Back From The War. She is considered a film critic, webpage tinkerer, web design educator, digital curator, art entrepreneur, archivist and, GIF model.

  • An artwork she created before the year 2000 is My Boyfriend Came Back From The War. This artwork is a hypertext narrative that unfolds a story whenever you click on the picture or text. The story can unfold in several different ways which allow people to feel like they have control of the story even though the path is set by Olia.
  • Another artwork of hers is named Summer created in 2013. Summer is a GIF of her swinging back and forth from the browser. In this artwork, she is trying to mimic how the earlier browser works. The GIF swings back and forth slowly on a modern internet connection. How this GIF works is that the browser keeps on reloading and shows up with a new position of her on the swing.

John F. Simon Jr. is another New Media Artist based in America that works with LCD screens and computer programming. He is born in Louisiana in 1963. He won an award for Emerging Artist in 2000 and another award for Creative Capital Emerging Fields in 1999.

  • An artwork that he created before the year 2000 is Every Icon which is created on 14 January 1997. Every icon consists of a 32 by 32 square grid that can show every possible combination of black and white squares. He calculated that it would take approximately several hundred trillion years to finish all the possible combinations.
  • in 2018, he created an artwork called blossoming. Blossoming is shown on an LED touchscreen where people can touch the screen and a bunch of different colored square shows up.
