About Stereotyping

I found the passage about stereotyping Asian American students to be very insightful. I realised that the situation could be that apart from all the expectations, name-calling, being excluded from mainstream, what is also true is that, many people from their original countries don’t see Asian Americans as their people either.

So in a word, they are stuck in the middle. Not completely accepted by the American society however long their ancestors or themselves have been living and contributing here, and not considered to be their original countries’ people either. What this situation provided is more cultural than political. However, what they fail to see is that, no matter how other people from any place of the world think of them, they are functional and equal parts of this society contributing just as much as others. Being stereotyped could inflict painful experience, but one should be open-minded enough to realize that only people who’s not would go down this road and there’s nothing anyone could do about it. Only when those who’s being stereotyped can see through the situation and understand that what others think of them is not as important as how they think of themselves and do thier best to prove their value in any way preferred is good enough combating stereotypes. Everybody is suffering from stereotyped in way or other as long as they live in a society, some let it break them and be defeated, some see things through and rise and shine from it. It might just be a matter of choice.
So as educators, we should let our students understand the inevitable trend of being stereotyped and start to be proud of who they are and try to live outside of the stereotypes, then the others who is not open-minded enough to accept them as competent and functional members of this society wherever they are coming from or look like they are coming from will only have to change their minds over time because the truth should always prevail.

  1. Hi Effy, I can see your point that people suffering from negative stereotyping should treat themselves nice and consider themselves with a more positive attitude. You think this way because discrimination against a certain group of people doesn’t exist in your mindset. However, for people who are discriminated can perceive bias all the time. What causes their pain is not only how others think of them, but how they can overcome the implicit stereotype. They themselves will be affected by the stereotype and even begin to believe the justification of the stereotype.
