A picture is worth a thousand words

In a world with an ever growing use of technology for a variety of reasons and uses, there is one medium in particular that continues to rise to the top: Social Media. Social media platforms have increased our ability to become global citizens, giving us access to information, places, and people that, prior to globalization, we never knew or could have known. With social media taking up a greater place in society, educators should seize the opportunity to incorporate it in their classrooms. Out of all of the social media platforms, I personally prefer Instagram. This preference has led me to wonder how it could be used in an educational setting. Youtube is a great entertainment tool and learning tool as well. Everyone can create their own channel, share their videos, and comment on others’. I personally follow some youtubers and some channels to learn English and somethings I can never be exposed to. Approaching the topic of youth’s connection with media and technology through a parental lens, I have a conservative stance. I believe that too much technology can negatively affect a child’s ability to create and imagine; to a teenager, the internet serves as an extremely useful tool, however, with its great power comes great responsibility. Could it be? Am I being a stick in the mud? Say it ain’t so…

When I initially sat down to think about social media and youth and how the two intersect in the classroom, I have to admit that a part of me cringed at the term “social media.”  It’s a knee jerk reaction as the product of two adults who are adamantly opposed to all things related to social media. With that said though, I fully acknowledge that my response does not entirely make sense because I myself use social media (Facebook and now Twitter). This makes me think that my reaction sounds more like the way an old lion will sometimes roar just to make sure that those around him know that he still has what it takes.
