This was definitely the more moving article for me. I always knew in the back of my head that minorities had more trouble in school and that they had a higher dropout rate, but I never stopped to think about the causes behind that. I always thought that in general minorities had a hard time in school just because of the simple fact that they are minorities. This paper went into the much deeper causes behind that using minorities with disabilities as an example. If you are Black you already must have a hard time in school, let alone if you are Black with a disability like the subjects in this study.
However, I was also pleased to notice that most of the students did have a will to succeed in school. I particularly liked what one student said: “The only way you can get a good job and a future is to go to school. The only way to learn the new skills in the future is school.” In some classrooms today you can really feel like the students do not want to be there and therefore do not know how important school is in shaping your future. But this quote reassured me, that there are still students out there who are trying their best to succeed.
